It forms one of the oldest and most common means of sharing (unproven) facts and views, but also has a reputation for the introduction of errors and other variations into the information transmitted. The term also carries implications that the news so transmitted (usually) has a personal or trivial nature, as opposed to normal conversation. The term is sometimes used to specifically refer to the spreading of dirt and misinformation, as (for example) through excited discussion of scandals. Some newspapers carry “gossip columns” which detail the social and personal lives of celebrities or of élite members of certain communities. |
| Commentary from the Designer: A shirt design with a good humorous approach to stopping gossip and rumors. As the vintage artwork from World War II indicates, gossip has always been a problem. The loose lips sink ships slogan comes directly from the threat to naval vessels when people talked about ship movement during the war. Enemy spies would relay the information to submarines and sailors and soldiers lost their lives as a result. Today gossip still hurts people. |
